Directions

  • From Skye Lodge go out the driveway and turn left, then left again towards the village. You can choose to walk clockwise or anticlockwise and there are several points of access. Officially the trail starts at the Church of Scotland or through the gate opposite Kilmuir road. Alternatives are via St. Mary’s Church, or up the steps to the memorial and continue up the hill to the Druirinish stone. The last option is opposite the Castle holiday cottages as marked on google maps through a wooden gate covered in moss.

  • The trail is popular with locals and paths are well trodden so can get muddy. The Church of Scotland could seem not very impressive in itself, but look for the painted windows. The wooded part of the trail has been decorated with fairies and other surprises. At the junction turn up the hill, down will take you back to the road is opposite the Castle holiday cottages.

  • The top section goes across open moor with sweeping views of the loch and Macloed’s tables and on clear days the Cullins. Following the trail will eventually take you down to the A850 or look for a small gate to head to the standing stone and from here to the old church yard or down the steeper side of the hill to the war memorial.

Highlights

  • Very high chance of seeing eagles along this route.

  • A good option for a morning run which avoids the main road.

  • Takes you through woodlands and moorlands with lovely wild flowers in spring and summer.

Photo Opportunities

  • The Duirinish Stone: erected in 2000 to celebrate the new millennium. Set in a concrete base, it stands approximately 5m high and was erected by hand. Its strikes an iconic shape amongst the mountains - go at sunrise or sunset.

  • Evocative portrait shots taken amongst the ruins of the church.

  • For kids: fairies hidden in the woods! How many can they catch on camera?
